EXPLORE THE MUSEUM
Air Force Museum Exhibit Update
In the next three months a number of new exhibits will be unveiled at the museum. The largest undertaking is celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Flying Corps (RFC). The RFC was the embryo of all Commonwealth Air Forces, i.e. the RAF and RCAF. The exhibit will feature a life size mannequin of Fred McCall Sr. in period flying gear, an audio visual screen, new graphics illustrating the RFC in action as well as outlining its' history and a mounted Bronze Plaque honouring the RFC.
A Lancaster Bomb Bay suspended from the ceiling will complement the Bomber Command display. This will provide an indication of the size and bomb carrying capacity of the Lancaster.
The Air Transport display located in the rear of the Hercules Theatre will tell the story of transport aircraft in Canada's Air Force.
Completing the new exhibits will be an interactive touch screen featuring RCAF Squadrons which operated overseas in WWII. It will also feature a display of Aircrew Wings, Service Medals and Campaign Stars.
Two new aircraft are in the plans for the museum, but that story must wait until the next "Tribute".
Third Annual Golf Tournament
The Air Force Museum Society of Alberta is holding its third annual golf tournament at the Siverwing Links Golf Couse on Thursday July 19th at 13:00 hrs. Say goodbye to the tent as Silverwing has nearly completed their new tournament building addition which will be used for this year's event. Our promotional campaign is underway with letters to last year's golfers and sponsors being mailed out as the first hint of spring hits Calgary. The Masters has been held as well as the annual Calgary golf show and it's time to start cleaning the clubs and visiting your driving range.
Last year's tournament was enjoyed by all participants and raised just over $14,000. This money is used to help support on-going expenses including artifact acquisition and refurbishment, office equipment and general expenses incurred while running our museum. Once again the Calgary Police have provided us with a HAWC helicopter ride-along certificate and we are hoping to also have several significant aircraft rides available in this year's auction as well as other interesting items.
We had 65 golfers last year and hope to increase that number this year. This tournament is not just for members of our museum society or the military so if you know someone who might be interested in entering a foursome or sponsoring a hole please have them contact myself.
Golf tournament information and payment can be made online via our secure payment system at www.rcaf.museum

Gerald Morrison a Cochrane veteran of the Canadian Forces received the Minister of Veteran Affairs Commendation during a ceremony in Calgary on Jan 18.
The acclamation which was awarded to 13 people from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba is bestowed upon those who have provided admirable service to the veteran community, something Morrison has been extremely active in after serving his country for 36 years.
Retiring in 1991, Morrison was the Director of the Aero Space Museum of Calgary for seven years, where he worked to refurbish various military artifacts, including a Canadian Sabre jet fighter.
Recognizing the need to honour Second World War veterans, he established an annuual banquet, which is attended by over 170 veterans each year.
Morrison was hand picked by a group of retired Air Force officers to sit as chairman of the newly established Air Force Museum Society of Alberta. During his first five years, Morrison's committee raised $850,000 for the museum which opened its doors in 2009.
The decorated Cochranite also served on the board for The Friends of the Colonel Belcher Veterans Hospital for eight years.
Steven Blaney, minister of veterans' affairs presented Morrison with the honour on Jan 18, 2012
"I am pleased to recognize the efforts of those who ensure that the contributions of our veterans are acknowledged" the minister stated.

The current membership of the Air Force Museum Society of Alberta stands at 130 members and has increased by 10 to 12 per cent per year over the past two years. A strong and active membership is an important pillar of support for the chairman and board members when in pursuit of new artifacts such as the recently acquired CF-18 or when seeking grants and favourable policy decisions from entities such as DND, the city or provincial authorities. Membership dues are a small but important element of museum funding that supports day to day operations as well as the pursuit of new artifacts and historical displays.
In addition to the self satisfaction of being part of the opening up of pieces of RCAF history at the Air Force Museum, all members and their immediate families are entitled to visit free of charge the Air Force, Navy and Army museums located at the Military Museums site situated on Crowchild Trail. As well all members are invited to attend our Annual General Meeting held in May of each year.
We have recently introduced a new RCAF museum website at www.rcaf.museum and at this site one can easily renew his or her membership with a credit card using PayPal services. Please take a peek at this website and especially the membership portion.
The Chairman and Board of Directors sincerely thank each and every member for their continued support of the Air Force Museum Society. Without you the Air Force Museum would not exist.
